Communal Style Dining

Communal Style Dining

Maybe you are dining solo but want to be social during mealtime. Or perhaps you and your bestie want to meet new people and make some friends over a weekend meal. Eating in closed groups is the restaurant dining standard among most patrons. Sitting next to someone you don't know can be initially awkward. But this restaurant trend is nonetheless growing as it is a fun way to interact with others and make connections in a casual setting. But there are a few things you should know before you pull up a seat by the table.

Communal tables for restaurants are one of the biggest emerging trends that is making a comeback. These are long and shared tables where people typically sit close to others they don't know. Though not entirely a new concept, this dining trend has had some success, especially in the quick-service restaurant industry and among other public dining spaces such as cafeterias. Even fine dining establishments started to adapt to communal dining. Today's diners seemingly want a side of social interaction served with their meals. And communal restaurant tables are quick to deliver. From utilizing dining spaces better to providing enhanced social experiences, communal tables are changing things up at restaurants.

Communal Restaurant Tables

What is a Communal Table and How is it Different from a Drop-Leaf Restaurant Table?

In terms of functionality, you may wonder how a communal table is different from grouping standard restaurant tables together or drop leaf tables (or any table with extensions).

Communal tables are essentially large tables that seat more than one party at a time. Although in the rage right now, communal tables are not a foreign concept. Up until the 19th century, communal tables were a common sight in public dining rooms, inns, and halls in Europe. In those days, only the wealthy could afford to eat in private dining rooms. Restaurants as people know today, which seat people at their own tables, didn't exist until they were introduced in Paris by the 1760s. This style gradually became more popular and it remains in what is seen at most restaurants today.

You can accommodate as many people with standard restaurant tables with drop leaves as you can with a communal table. Both types of tables function to save space and create more seating space for customers. A communal table is generally larger in dimensions than a singular drop-leaf table and works better in spaces that encourage shared dining. When you run an eatery where there are more diners than tables, communal tables can be very convenient as most patrons, especially in informal dining establishments, are willing to share a table with others rather than wait for another group to finish so they could be seated.

Communal Table Dimensions and Characteristics

Communal tables on average stand 30" or 42" high, 36" wide, and 72" long. Dimensions can be adjusted to meet your specifications. They include a 2" thick rectangular hardwood table top supported by powder-coated full welded steel legs. The table surface can be customized in a variety of wood stains. Each top is sealed with a protective finish that stands against rotting, impact, chipping, fading, splitting, and warping. Bases provide a durable and reliable foundation to showcase the craftsmanship of the table top. A communal table can seat between 6 to 8 people at a time thus maximizing your venue's square footage.

Communal Restaurant Tables

With a multitude of sizes and designs to choose from, there is a perfect fit for every space and decor. A vast selection of textures and colors for each communal table allows you to find the right balance and combination that embodies the ambiance at your venue. Perfect for all commercial applications and settings, communal tables welcome visitors everywhere and anywhere. They comfortably fit more people into limited spaces with plenty of room for plates and glasses. A table with a wider surface is recommended for family-style restaurants as it leaves more room for shared platters in the middle.

Benefits of a Communal Table

One of the many benefits of having a communal table at your restaurant is that it evokes an egalitarian and traditional way of eating. It sets a casual atmosphere that is ideal for both solo and sociable diners satisfying a deep-seated human need for community. It also raises a restaurant's profits by expanding the number of guests that it can serve. They also increase the number of seats in smaller spaces thus potentially boosting restaurant sales as well playing a crucial role in developing a better dining experience for customers.

Communal Restaurant Tables

The current dining trend among millennials and Gen Z is to find a restaurant that allows them to graze, linger and socialize at their leisure. Communal tables fulfill this trend, therefore, appealing to millennial diners who look for destinations where they can engage with others or with technology and create an out-of-office workspace. Communal tables make it much easier for customers to eat at their own pace without feeling rushed, start a conversation with others, or work behind their computer screens. They give customers a lot more freedom to decide how they would like to enjoy their experience.

Starbucks and McDonald's have been using communal tables for years. Communal tables are a big part of delivering the type of in-restaurant experience that more guests seek today. For Starbucks, however, redesigning their coffee shops to feature communal tables along with new modern designs was about integrating communities with local stores. Starbucks is very much about group experience, making communal tables a commodity.

Special Considerations to Make

When it comes to matching restaurant tables with different restaurant concepts, there isn't a one-size-fits-all. Restaurants and quick food service eateries that focus more on providing a more social and communal experience to customers will be more successful as they foster human interaction. Communal tables can be used for high-turnaround seating or seating large groups of people. They also impact how wait staff and customers engage with each other. Staff members should be well trained and prepared to handle their guests and encourage more interaction between them.

Communal Restaurant Tables

If your restaurant or bar is considering using a communal table as an extension of its space, it's important to think about how the table will affect the concept's success and how will having such a table that fit with your restaurant environment.

  • Will communal tables allow for more seating at your restaurant? Or will they interfere with your workflow and turnover?
  • Will your staff be able to manage and encourage interaction with customers seated at communal tables?

Most importantly, you should offer alternative seating options to guests who are not keen on sitting at a shared table with strangers. While communal tables cannot accommodate every restaurant situation and need, they do, however, make an impact on how customers are enjoying their meals. They have brought dining out to new heights and made it more about enjoying the food and the restaurant. It looks like the trend will be staying around for a while. No longer are communal tables limited to cafeterias and lunchrooms. You could well be having your next meal at a shared table.

Dining Table With China Cabinet

Dining Table With China Cabinet

I love working on home furniture and like giving tips to others.

Our old 6' x 3' table that seated six.

Our old 6' x 3' table that seated six.

Our new 4'x8' table that seats 8–10.

Our old 6' x 3' table that seated six.

I remember we bought our 6-foot pine table when our first child was born. It seemed enormous to us! Two young people and a tiny baby, why did we buy so big?

Well, roll on another 16 years and not only are there more kids, but they are huge and their friends are huge and, quite frankly, that enormous 6-foot table became way too small!

I looked into new tables. But with three active boys, I didn't want something so fine that I'd always be fretting about glass marks, spills, and scratches. I also didn't particularly want to drop a grand or two on a piece of furniture.

But we found a solution for a beautiful new table that is so easy and inexpensive, it's just ridiculous!

Make Your Existing Table Bigger With a 4' x 8' Board

Simply overlay your existing table with a larger board that has an attractive veneer on one face—this is birch. Stain and gloss the top to match the existing legs (or stain and gloss the legs too like we did).

The entire project including stain and gloss came in under $100, plus a few hours of my time. Five years down the road, it's still serving us well. And we have not outgrown it!

how-to-make-your-dining-table-bigger

Materials Needed

  • 1 4' x 8' plywood board (with veneer on one side)
  • 4 lengths of wood, each 1" x 1" x 2' long
  • 2 short pieces of wood, 4" x 1" x 1"
  • 2 2" nails
  • wood edging tape (see link below)
  • wood glue
  • wood stain and wood gloss of your choice
The unfinished 8' x 4' plywood board.

You'll need four struts of wood approximately 1" x 1" x 2'.

The unfinished 8' x 4' plywood board.

How to Make Your Dining Room Table Bigger With a 4' x 8' Board

Here's the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Decide on the Right Size

Choose how large you want your table to be. (Keep in mind that it must work proportionally with your existing table's legs.) The boards are sold 4' x 8', but you can ask to have it cut down if you want it smaller.

Note: You must get a board that has a veneer (such as birch) on one side.

Step 2: Glue Wood to the Underside of Your Board

Now take your four 2' lengths of wood and glue them to the underside (non-veneer side) of your board in an open rectangle so that when the board is laid on top of the table, the table will fit reasonably snugly. It doesn't have to be a tight fit, a little space OK to prevent slippage. Measure carefully because you want it set on straight. (See diagram.)

Step 3: Nail the Struts

Take the two 2" nails and nail the two 4" struts to the center of each of the two long struts running along the two longer edges of the board. (See diagram at right.) This will allow you to pivot each small strut and "lock" the board onto the table so that it cannot be tipped up accidentally. You will need to look carefully at your own table and think this through, making any adjustments necessary, as every table is different.

Step 4: Measure the Board and Apply Wood Edging Tape

Place the board on the table, veneer side up, and measure the total edge of your board. Apply the wood edging tape, following the manufacturer's directions. (This is usually a process that involves ironing on the tape in order to dissolve the pre-applied adhesive.)

Step 5: Stain and Gloss the Board

Transform your board and its new wood trim with a beautiful wood stain of your choosing. Again keep in mind the look and color of the existing table's legs. Can you stain those to match? We did! When you are happy with the color, finish it with two coats of polyurethane, gloss, or semi-gloss, again your choice of finish. (You can also buy stain and gloss all-in-one to save time.)

Struts hold the board in place on the old table (viewed from below).

Thanks for the comments, everybody!

Good point, Marcy (that I probably should have made myself!) that this larger tabletop can be added and taken away as needed. Always good to have that option for larger groups.

ANd yes, Cyndi10, the ever-shrinking desk (like my ever-shrinking jeans...), I'm sure it would work well for this too.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing, janikon and summerberrie!

poowool5, this is such a great hub for how to expand your table. I really enjoyed reading it and the do it yourself pictures were perfect!

Very clever and inexpensive idea. Voted up and shared.

Cynthia B Turner from Georgia on May 02, 2012:

Clever, Clever idea. You took a lot of time with those instructions, too. Maybe something similar would work on my desk which seems to be shrinking! Good hub.

Marcy Goodfleisch from Planet Earth on May 02, 2012:

I cracked up at your "Doesn't that apron make me look fat?" comment!

Seriously - I love this hub! I've been trying to figure a way to 'expand' my petite dining table that's bigger on looks than on function. I hadn't thought of adding the underside braces to make a false top more stable. I would probably use it now and then (rather than all the time), but I sure do need it when I need it.

Voted up, useful, awesome and interesting! And shared!

poowool5 (author) from here in my house on April 28, 2012:

Whoops, sorry to be late getting back to your question, PJ. I bought the plywood from our local old-fashioned lumber store, the kind with a lumberyard out back. I am surprised Lowes didn't sell these. Perhaps try calling a few places to ask in advance so you don't have wasted trips. Hope you can locate it. What I smugly enjoy most is the comments of my friends with expensive tastes as they admire it, not realizing it didn't cost me an arm and a leg!

PJ on April 18, 2012:

Great idea! This is JUST what I was looking for. Thanks so much for sharing! One question - where did you buy your plywood board? I checked my local home improvement store (Lowe's) but didn't come across any with a veneer on one side. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful idea!

poowool5 (author) from here in my house on March 31, 2012:

Thanks for the comment, Robie. You know, for little money, it really can give a table a new lease of life. I didn't think we would keep it for so long, but it still looks good after years of daily use, so you know, if it ain't broke...

Today we dyed Easter eggs right on the table, no protective newspaper etc...guess not much gets through a couple coats of polyurethane, because it didn't affect the table at all. And that's what I need with three boys...ROBUST furniture ;)

Thanks for the comment!

Robie Benve from Ohio on March 31, 2012:

Great idea! I have an old table that on top of being small, has some water damage, we keep it in the (non-used) dining room for the kid's homework, and this plywood board treatment may be just what it needs. Thanks for sharing, and I love the pictures, very helpful! Ciao

poowool5 (author) from here in my house on March 12, 2012:

Great idea and totally rated up! I have 4 kids and it seems like the table is never big enough. Then, if any of my friends come over with their kids... ugh! Nice tips and easy to do. Rated up - Steph

poowool5 (author) from here in my house on March 11, 2012:

Thanks Lizam1. The board is only 3/4" thick, so, yes, the table would be higher, but only by 3/4". Not really noticeable.

Nice idea - one question does laying the board on top make the table an odd height?

How to Set Up a Wireless Printer

CC0/Pixabay

It was once a luxury to print from anywhere in your home or office, but affordable wireless printers now make it easy for anyone to print using Wi-Fi connections. And you don't have to be intimidated at the idea of installing a wireless printer in your home or office. They are remarkably easy to install if you know the right steps. Use these tips to quickly and easily set up your new wireless printer.

Unpack and Prepare for Setup

When you get your new printer home, make sure everything you need is in the box. It should come with a power cord, instructions and starter ink cartridges. Carefully examine all the parts of the printer to make sure you have removed all protective tape and stickers. Place the printer within range of your Wi-Fi router or access point. (Most have a range of about 50 feet.) Most printers require you to set up the software with basic information and then wait for the ink cartridges to run tests and align.

Connect the Printer to Your Wireless Network

To connect your printer to your network, you need your network name (often called the SSID) and password. If your printer has a button labeled WSP or with the Wi-Fi icon, press it and then quickly go to your router and press the same button (within two minutes). This sets up an automatic connection between the network and the printer. If this connection works, you can proceed to the next step.

If you don't have a WSP or Wi-FI icon button, you need to go into the printer's menu to establish a connection. See the instructions that came with the printer for the exact steps. Some printers require a manual connection between the computer and the printer to establish a connection the first time. If that's necessary, the documentation that came with the printer can walk you through that process.

Add the Printer Driver to Your PC

If you're running Windows 8 or later, go to Settings by right clicking the Windows button. If you're using Windows 7 or earlier, use the Start Menu to access the Control Panel. Choose "Devices" or "View Devices and Printers," click "Add a printer," and then choose your printer from the list of devices. It may take a few minutes for your printer to appear, so be patient. Windows automatically installs the drivers for most printers. If that doesn't happen, you can install it yourself by downloading it from the manufacturer's website or from the CD that came with your printer.

Add the Printer Driver to Your Mac

Click the Apple icon at the top of the screen and choose "System Preferences." Click on "Printers & Scanners," and when the window appears, click the plus symbol (+) at the bottom. The new printer should appear in the list in the window. If it doesn't show up, you can search for it in the search bar. When the printer appears, click on it to highlight it, and then choose "Auto Select" from the dropdown box that reads "Choose a Driver." If it's available from Apple, click "Add" to automatically download the driver software. If it isn't available for automatic installation, you can install it yourself by downloading it from the manufacturer's website or from the CD that came with your printer.

Enjoy Printing to Your New Printer

Once the software is installed, you should be able to print to your new printer. Windows lets you send a test print to the printer, or you can open a document or photo to print. If the printer doesn't work, you may need to restart the printer and computer to get them to communicate with each other. Once you establish a connection, you can enjoy the freedom of printing a recipe from the kitchen, a family photo from the living room and so much more.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Outdoor Dining Set

Outdoor dining sets are available in a huge range of shapes, sizes, and styles. With so many options, shopping for a new set can be overwhelming, but with a few factors in mind, you can find the perfect outdoor seating. To find the best outdoor dining set for your outdoor space, consider the set's size, design, material, comfort, and additional convenient features.

Outdoor Space

The size and shape of the outdoor space is one of the first factors to consider when choosing a new outdoor dining set. Most dining sets include a circular, square, or rectangular table. Choose a shape and appropriate size that best fits the outdoor space without overwhelming the area. Also, make sure to allow enough area for guests to move around the table, pull out a chair, and seat themselves.

Consider the surface of the area where the dining set will be placed. Most table and patio chair designs will work well on a flat patio or porch, but be mindful of any grooves in decking that can catch on thin chair legs. For slightly uneven surfaces like a grassy lawn, a thicker table and chair legs with wide feet are usually a better pick. If the seating area gets a lot of direct sunlight, a center table hole for adding a patio umbrella may be ideal.

Material

When it comes to choosing a dining set material, durability, maintenance, and style are the main features to consider. Outdoor dining sets come in a wide array of materials made to withstand the outdoors. Common materials include wood, synthetic resin materials, glass, plastic, aluminum, and steel.

Beyond the look of the material, consider how well it will withstand weather conditions in the area. For example, extreme sun and heat can make wood splinter, very cold temperatures can make plastic crack, and salty air conditions can affect many metals. These climate factors can impact the furniture's longevity and maintenance requirements.

The materials of any cushions or other fabric elements also are important. Look for weatherproof fabric materials like vinyl, polyester, or fade-resistant fabrics like Sunbrella that are designed for weather conditions. Although these materials are tough, consider bringing cushions indoors when not in use to prevent mildewing or aging from the sun.

Style

An outdoor dining set can be a stylish centerpiece in a patio or backyard. When choosing an outdoor dining set, consider the aesthetics of the outdoor space and the dining set's intended use. Dining sets come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and materials, all of which contribute to their style.

For a more casual atmosphere, a circular table works well for small gatherings. For dinner parties or more formal events, a long rectangular table offers a more traditional dining look and room for more seating. Smaller tables provide an intimate setting, while larger tables are excellent for hosting a group of friends.

Color and material also contribute to design, and the right pick will come down to personal preference. Consider sleek materials like metal and glass for a more modern look, while natural materials like wood, wicker, and teak can lend a more rustic and warm aesthetic.

Comfort

Whether choosing a small bistro set for relaxing outdoors or a long dining table for entertaining guests, comfort is a top priority. With a comfortable dining set, the outdoors can be enjoyed for hours on end.

An ergonomic seat, soft cushions, and sling chair designs can turn a simple chair into a cozy lounger. Ergonomic dining chairs have supportive seats, backs, and armrests to make them more comfortable than their stiffer counterparts.

Sling chairs use lightweight fabrics to create a comfortable hammock-like sling to sit on. Cushions are the quickest way to turn a hard chair into a cushy seat, and are made from a range of water-resistant or quick-drying materials to make them suitable for outdoor use.

Maintenance

In addition to weather, spills, and stains, outdoor dining sets can fall victim to dirt and mildew throughout the seasons, so look for a pick that is easy to clean. All outdoor furniture will need an occasional wipe- or hose-down, at a minimum.

Water-resistant materials are a top pick since they are durable, simple to clean, and tend to resist spills and dirt. Covering or bringing in the dining set during bad weather or the off season will keep the furniture clean and extend its lifespan.

Some materials, like some woods, rattan, and metal, may need additional maintenance if you notice rust or the protective varnish wearing off. Follow the manufacturer's care guidelines to restore the look of these pieces.

Weight and Additional Features

Dining sets can range in weight from lightweight plastic options to heftier wooden builds. For those in windy areas, consider a heavier dining set so the chairs won't go skidding away with a big gust of wind. For those who prefer to rearrange their space for events and activities, a lighter dining set will be easier to move around.

Stackable chairs and foldable tables can make the furniture easier to store or tuck to the side when not in use. For even more convenience, consider a multipurpose design, like modular sofa seating or tables and ottomans with hidden storage. For entertaining, some outdoor dining tables have extendable or fold-up leaves to add extra space for guests.

Our Top Picks

Dining alfresco is one of life's simple pleasures, and the right dining set can make the experience even more pleasant. The best outdoor dining sets are comfortable, durable, and stylish to provide outdoor seating season after season. Keep reading to explore some of the best outdoor dining sets for upgrading your outdoor living space.

If a table for two is needed for morning coffee dates and intimate backyard dinners, consider this pretty patio set from Best Choice Products. The three-piece set includes a round bistro table and two chairs. Made of solid cast aluminum, they have a rust- and weather-resistant finish to last several seasons.

The compact set can fit a range of tight outdoor spots, like apartment balconies and small porches. Both the table and chairs have a decorative tulip floral design and a brushed bronze antique finish to add a bit of charm to any outdoor space. This compact bistro set is an affordable and functional accent piece for a garden or patio oasis.

The Outdoor Dining Set Option: Best Choice Products 5-Piece Wicker Bar Table Set

This wicker bar table set from Best Choice Products is the ideal pick for poolside parties and after-dinner drinks. The bar-height set includes a tall table and four bar stools. Each piece has a sturdy steel frame and features all-weather wicker for a classic, smooth finish. The bar stools feature nonslip feet, and a sturdy footrest makes each seat comfortable and safe.

For easier cleanup, the table features a metal tabletop instead of wicker. The slatted metal tabletop resembles wood, but it's easier to clean in the case of stains and spills. To make this dining set an even better party piece, the middle of the table features a built-in bottle opener and a hidden storage compartment.

The Outdoor Dining Set Option: Wisteria Lane Patio Furniture Set

An ideal centerpiece for a family gathering outdoors, this seven-piece patio set includes two single love seats, one corner love seat, one dining table, three ottomans, and various plush cushions. Create a seating configuration or push the love seats together to form a long sectional couch, ideal for hosting a group. Depending on the configuration (and how cozy it needs to be) this set can comfortably seat anywhere from six to eight people.

The set features a sturdy galvanized steel frame covered in all-weather polyethylene wicker. A slatted tabletop is easy to clean and gives guests a sturdy spot to place drinks and food. The ottoman and couches have thick, durable beige cushions for long-term comfort.

FAQs About Outdoor Dining Sets

A new outdoor dining set can turn an unused patio or backyard into a lovely space for relaxing and entertaining. Finding the right set is important to ensure a suitable fit and adequate seating space. Keep reading for answers to some frequently asked questions about choosing and setting up a new outdoor dining set.

Q. What size patio dining set should I get?

Consider the size of the outdoor space and the number of guests you hope to seat. Choose a dining set that won't overcrowd your outdoor space but has adequate seating spaces.

Q. What outdoor dining set shape is best for my patio?

Choose the dining set shape according to your intended use and your preferred aesthetic. Round tables are ideal for casual seating and informal gatherings, while larger square or rectangular tables are usually chosen for dinner parties and formal sit-down events.

Q. What are the right cushions for patio dining sets?

Cushion style, color, and thickness will come down to personal preference, but make sure to look for a sturdy material that can handle the outdoors.

Q. How do I set an outdoor dining table?

For outdoor dining, consider using heavier plates and glasses that won't blow away in the wind. Simpler decorations with nature-inspired elements and colors can be a pretty pick.

Final Thoughts

An outdoor dining set provides a lovely spot for relaxing outside and can serve as the perfect backdrop for summer barbecues, morning coffee on the patio, or balmy outdoor dinner parties. A comfortable and stylish pick upgrades an outdoor space and turns it into a cozy oasis for relaxing and entertaining.

Since many outdoor dining sets can be costly, it's important to find a pick that suits your needs and decor style as well as being comfortable, sturdy, and simple to maintain.
